Krauthammer: Those troublesome Jews
The world is outraged at Israel's blockade of Gaza. Turkey denounces its illegality, inhumanity, barbarity, etc. The usual U.N. suspects, Third World and European, join in. The Obama administration dithers.
But as Leslie Gelb, former president of the Council on Foreign Relations, writes, the blockade is not just perfectly rational, it is perfectly legal. Gaza under Hamas is a self-declared enemy of Israel -- a declaration backed up by more than 4,000 rockets fired at Israeli civilian territory. Yet having pledged itself to unceasing belligerency, Hamas claims victimhood when Israel imposes a blockade to prevent Hamas from arming itself with still more rockets.
In World War II, with full international legality, the United States blockaded Germany and Japan. And during the October 1962 missile crisis, we blockaded ("quarantined") Cuba. Arms-bearing Russian ships headed to Cuba turned back because the Soviets knew that the U.S. Navy would either board them or sink them. Yet Israel is accused of international criminality for doing precisely what John Kennedy did: impose a naval blockade to prevent a hostile state from acquiring lethal weaponry.
Oh, but weren't the Gaza-bound ships on a mission of humanitarian relief? No. Otherwise they would have accepted Israel's offer to bring their supplies to an Israeli port, be inspected for military materiel and have the rest trucked by Israel into Gaza -- as every week 10,000 tons of food, medicine and other humanitarian supplies are sent by Israel to Gaza.
Why was the offer refused? Because, as organizer Greta Berlin admitted, the flotilla was not about humanitarian relief but about breaking the blockade, i.e., ending Israel's inspection regime, which would mean unlimited shipping into Gaza and thus the unlimited arming of Hamas.
Israel has already twice intercepted ships laden with Iranian arms destined for Hezbollah and Gaza. What country would allow that?
But even more important, why did Israel even have to resort to blockade? Because, blockade is Israel's fallback as the world systematically de-legitimizes its traditional ways of defending itself -- forward and active defense.
(1) Forward defense: As a small, densely populated country surrounded by hostile states, Israel had, for its first half-century, adopted forward defense -- fighting wars on enemy territory (such as the Sinai and Golan Heights) rather than its own.
Where possible (Sinai, for example) Israel has traded territory for peace. But where peace offers were refused, Israel retained the territory as a protective buffer zone. Thus Israel retained a small strip of southern Lebanon to protect the villages of northern Israel. And it took many losses in Gaza, rather than expose Israeli border towns to Palestinian terror attacks. It is for the same reason America wages a grinding war in Afghanistan: You fight them there, so you don't have to fight them here.
But under overwhelming outside pressure, Israel gave it up. The Israelis were told the occupations were not just illegal but at the root of the anti-Israel insurgencies -- and therefore withdrawal, by removing the cause, would bring peace.
Land for peace. Remember? Well, during the past decade, Israel gave the land -- evacuating South Lebanon in 2000 and Gaza in 2005. What did it get? An intensification of belligerency, heavy militarization of the enemy side, multiple kidnappings, cross-border attacks and, from Gaza, years of unrelenting rocket attack.
(2) Active defense: Israel then had to switch to active defense -- military action to disrupt, dismantle and defeat (to borrow President Obama's description of our campaign against the Taliban and al-Qaeda) the newly armed terrorist mini-states established in southern Lebanon and Gaza after Israel withdrew.
The result? The Lebanon war of 2006 and Gaza operation of 2008-09. They were met with yet another avalanche of opprobrium and calumny by the same international community that had demanded the land-for-peace Israeli withdrawals in the first place. Worse, the U.N. Goldstone report, which essentially criminalized Israel's defensive operation in Gaza while whitewashing the casus belli -- the preceding and unprovoked Hamas rocket war -- effectively de-legitimized any active Israeli defense against its self-declared terror enemies.
(3) Passive defense: Without forward or active defense, Israel is left with but the most passive and benign of all defenses -- a blockade to simply prevent enemy rearmament. Yet, as we speak, this too is headed for international de-legitimation. Even the United States is now moving toward having it abolished.
But, if none of these is permissible, what's left?
Ah, but that's the point. It's the point understood by the blockade-busting flotilla of useful idiots and terror sympathizers, by the Turkish front organization that funded it, by the automatic anti-Israel Third World chorus at the United Nations, and by the supine Europeans who've had quite enough of the Jewish problem.
What's left? Nothing. The whole point of this relentless international campaign is to deprive Israel of any legitimate form of self-defense. Why, just last week, the Obama administration joined the jackals, and reversed four decades of U.S. practice, by signing onto a consensus document that singles out Israel's possession of nuclear weapons -- thus de-legitimizing Israel's very last line of defense: deterrence.
The world is tired of these troublesome Jews, 6 million -- that number again -- hard by the Mediterranean, refusing every invitation to national suicide. For which they are relentlessly demonized, ghettoized and constrained from defending themselves, even as the more committed anti-Zionists -- Iranian in particular -- openly prepare a more final solution.

ReplyDeleteAfter reading this article, I find that the Jews are in a troublesome state as Israel is being unable to defend itself. The blockade of Gaza was due to the fact that Gaza is an enemy of Israel. Having fired more than 4000 rockets at Israeli civilian territory, it was explainable why Israel would want to impose a blockage on Hamas. Yet Hamas claimed victimhood.
In World War II, other countries have blockaded other country for various reasons. However, when Israel imposes a naval blockade to prevent a hostile state from acquiring lethal weaponry, they were accused of international criminality. I find it that this is unfair to them. Moreover, Gaza hopes to break the blockade to end Israel’s inspection regime, which would mean unlimited shipping into Gaza and thus the unlimited arming of Hamas. The Israel are being strip off their defence and will eventually be defendless. If this became successful, I am sure that the Jewish people will have a hard time defending themselves with so many countries against them.

ReplyDeleteAfter reading this article, I think Israel has every right to defend themselves by applying blockage on Gaza. This is because the Israeli civilian territory had been attacked by more than 4,000 rockets fired by Gaza. Therefore I think that something must be done to stop this from happening. However, when Israel has conducted blockage on Gaza, many countries had objected their actions. Thus I feel that it is very unfair to the Israeli.
Every week, 10,000 tons of food, medicine and other humanitarian supplies were sent by Israel to Gaza. But this time, Gaza-bound ships refused Israel’s offer to bring their supplies to Israeli port to be inspected for military materiel. This shows that the ships must have contained military materiel that would be use to attack Israel. Thus, they dare not to be inspected.
As a small, densely populated country surrounded by hostile states, it is normal to come up with strategies to defend their own country. However, the past two defences (forward and active defence) they used, were either unsuccessful or objected by other countries. Therefore these resulted in Israel to use the only defence left which is passive defence. But, this defence was again objected by many other countries. But the questions are why United States (US) had the right to blockaded Germany, Japan and Cuba? Why didn’t the United Nations (UN) stop the US’s actions? Therefore, I think that the UN is very biased as USA plays a huge role in UN thus nothing could be done to the US.
In conclusion, I think that with no defence available and no countries supporting Israel, Israel will be dead meat if Gaza continues to attack them.

ReplyDeleteFrom my background knowledge, Israel's diplomatic relationships with other countries especially with Palestine are not friendly.
From this article, the Israeli civilian territory had been attacked by more than 4,000 rockets fired by Gaza and therefore Israel had blockaded the Gaza. Yet, The United Nations had strongly opposed objection on Israel decision to blockade the Gaza. I think the Israel had being treated unfairly as she is not the first country to blockade another country. (US had blockaded Germany and Japan in World War II and Cuba in October 1962)
As a result, Israel had to set up her own defensive strategies to defend the Gaza's attack but her defensive policy was either failed or being objected by the United Nations again. Israel had no other options but to blockade the Gaza resulted the tension between the Israel and United Nations increases.
In conclusion, In order to claim down the situation, I think the best way is to let Israel, Gaza and the United Nations have a peace talk hold in a neutral country and find ways to sort things out. Hopefully there will be no war between Israel and the Gaza.

ReplyDeleteWe should not state that Israel is troublesome, because the main reason that they are doing this is to protect their country and its rights.
I feel that it is quite reasonable for Israel to require Gaza-bound ships to be inspected for military materials at its port before the supplies are transported to Gaza. This should be done for security purposes, since it prevents any unexpected attack from its self-declared enemy, Gaza (Hamas). It is also due to this reason that Israel intercepted the Gaza-bound ships when they refused to be inspected at the Israeli port.
Regardless of forward or active defense, Israel has no other choice but blockade, since this may be one of the most effective way to prevent military materials from entering Gaza. Despite many organizations commenting on Israel’s actions, it continued to proceed with its blockade of Gaza-bound ships, as this may be their way of survival.
After reading this article, I strongly disagree on the comment that the Jews are a troublesome bunch. If Gaza is already a self declared enemy of Israel, why is it such a big issue towards the rest of the world regarding Israel's blockade towards Gaza?
ReplyDeleteLike all the other countries did during the World War, the United States blockaded Germany and Japan with full international legality. There is no surprise Israel is thinking of the future safety of its own country, considering the 4000 rocket attacks by Gaza. I also think the best way for Israel's defense for the country is by using the active defense. By preparing for anything that can happen, military action and armed forces should be enforced. As compared to the passive defense. Not everyone might be agreeable to the blockades towards Gaza.

ReplyDeleteAfter reading the article, I feel that both Israel and Gaza should not even fight with each other. By fighting and attacking each other, what do they achieve in the end? The answer is obviously nothing but bringing pain and suffering to the people in their countries instead. The citizens of both Israel and Gaza are the real victims.
In my opinion, I think that Gaza is probably in the wrong in the first place. This is because Gaza had a declaration backed up by more than 4,000 rockets fired at Israeli civilian territory. Hence, it is just a self-defense for Israel to imposes a blockade to prevent Hamas from arming itself with still more rockets.
However, the world is outraged at Israel's blockade of Gaza. Thus, I am wondering why although John Kennedy did the same thing as Israel by imposing a naval blockade to prevent a hostile state from acquiring lethal weaponry, nobody said anything . Is the world being biased to Israel?
In conclusion, I wish that both Israel and Gaza should stop their actions and work towards peace instead. With peace, people can live happier. Therefore, I feel fortunate that Singapore is not facing the same situation.
