Cage fighter who ripped out partner's heart charged
05:55 AM Jun 03, 2010LONDON - An American cage fighter accused of ripping out the heart of his training partner while he was still alive will be charged with murder and torture, though his lawyer blamed the killing on a psychotic fit.
Jarrod Wyatt (picture), also cut out his friend's tongue and tore off most of his face in a brutal assault in Klamath, California, that police said looked like a scene from a horror film.
They found the 26 year old standing naked over his friend's body with body parts, including an eyeball, strewn around the blood splattered room.
Wyatt told police he had drunk a cup of tea spiked with hallucinogenic mushrooms and became convinced his close friend Taylor Powell was possessed.
According to an autopsy, Mr Powell, 21, bled to death after his heart was ripped out. The coroner said he was still alive when his chest was sliced open with a knife.
Wyatt told the police he had thrown the heart into a fire along with other organs that he had removed from the body. He told investigators he cooked the body parts because he was fearful Mr Powell was still alive and he "needed to stop the devil".
Police had been called to the grisly scene after a third friend had witnessed a sudden mood change in Wyatt after they had all ingested the wild mushroom tea.
Mr Justin Davis told police he returned to the flat to find Wyatt naked and covered from head to toe in blood. He also saw Mr Powell's mutilated body.
Lawyer James Fallman, who represents Wyatt, has claimed the wild mushrooms caused his client to act in such a violent way and he had no control over his actions.
"My client was trying to silence the devil," he said. "I think he was having a psychotic fit based on the mushrooms he had."
In an attempt to get the charges lowered, the lawyer also tried to argue that Wyatt believed Mr Powell was threatening his ex-girlfriend and overreacted trying to defend her. AGENCIES

ReplyDeleteI feel that Jarrod Wyatt is such a cold blooded human being, or shall I say he is a beast instead? How could he do such a cruel thing to his partner, Mr Powell? He is definitely heartless. Even if there is some conflict between them, he definitely should not torture his partner to the extent of ripping his heart ALIVE and cutting his tongue! The pain is excruciating that is beyond one‘s imagination.
To add on, Lawyer James Fallman, who represents Wyatt, tried to defence Wyatt by pushing the blame in the mushroom tea that Wyatt had drunk which resulted in Wyatt acting in such a violent way and he had no control over his actions. I do not believe it as everyone had drunk the same tea as Wyatt yet only Wyatt reacted that way. Thus, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the tea. Instead, in my opinion, I think that Wyatt is trying to vent his anger on Mr Powell.
In addition, James Fallman also tried to argue that Wyatt believed Mr Powell was threatening his ex-girlfriend and overreacted trying to defend her. In this case, the police must investigate thoroughly to find out the truth whether this statement is true or just a make-up story.
Personally, I strongly believe that we should not use such brutal act against people that we probably dislike. Will killing solve the problem? In contrary, it is an act of stupidity. The problem still exists. Also, I believe there is something called retribution. Justice must be done as such actions cannot be tolerated and forgiven. If Wyatt is guilty of murder, he must definitely be sentenced to death.
After reading this article, I have to say that I am in complete utter shock that such a thing has happened in London.
ReplyDeleteTaking in the hallucinogenic mushrooms have apparently caused this tragic incident to happen to Taylor Powell, Jarrod Wyatt's training partner. It was claimed that Wyatt thought Powell was possessed by a devil, and he could not control himself but to rip out his heart. Not only that, Powell's other organs had also been thrown into the fire.
If such a drug even exists in our modern world today, what kind of dangerous drugs will be sold to people around the world in decades? Years?
Even if the statement of getting hallucinated by the mushrooms is not true, the mere act of doing it is inhumane. Is Powell's "punishment" of threatening Wyatt's ex-girlfriend not enough?
In my point of view, the ongoing investigations should confirm the case of whether Wyatt did react this way because of the hallucinogenic mushrooms that was spiked in his drink. If results are proven to be right, Wyatt would probably get a lighter sentence.

ReplyDeleteThis unfortunate tragedy may have happened due to a few factors.
As a cage fighter, Wyatt should have suffered many injuries and used different drugs or medicines to control his pain or health condition. On top of this, he accidentally consumed hallucinogenic mushrooms, which caused him to behave differently. Others, who have not consumed other drugs or medicines before consuming the hallucinogenic mushrooms, may not suffer from the same kind of effects.
Hallucinogenic mushrooms can cause spiritual effects, such as to see, feel, or hear something that is not there, when consumed. This led Wyatt to be convinced that Powell was possessed by a devil. Moreover, his occupation as a cage fighter may have influenced him subconsciously to use violence when solving problems. Therefore, these factors may have led him to approach and kill Powell brutally whom he thought was a devil.
In conclusion, the combination of these factors resulted in this unexpected tragedy. Any other ordinary people will not behave in such a brutal manner for just consuming hallucinogenic mushrooms.

ReplyDeleteAfter reading through this article, I find that it is really ridiculous of killing a person in such a cruel way which reminds me of the recent murdering cases happened at Kallang in Singapore.
Just because Mr Wyatt a cage fighter was possessed by a "devil", he killed his close friend Mr Powell by cutting his friend tongue, tore off his face and ripped his heart out; I think this kind excuse given by Mr Wyatt's Lawyer James Fallman was definitely nonsense! Instead, I think Mr Wyatt had the intention to kill Mr Powell long time ago.
Hallucinogenic mushrooms caused Mr Wyatt to kill his friend in such a cruel way? I do not agree to a certain extent. This kind of drugs should have being forbidden in the country as the drug has a strong effectiveness. How can Mr Powell use to have such drug where he is not a doctor at all! (Unless he bought it from the black market)
In conclusion, justice cannot tolerate what Mr Jarrod Wyatt did to his friend. Mr Wyatt is a heartless killer like the famous Adolf Hitler where he should be justified by law.

ReplyDeleteAfter reading this article, I am totally disgusted by all those violent actions done by Wyatt. How can he be so cruel to his training partner?
In the article, it says that Wyatt TOLD police he drunk a cup of tea spiked with hallucinogenic mushrooms and became convinced his close friend Taylor Powell was possessed. But the question is, how did Wyatt know that his cup of tea was spiked with hallucinogenic mushrooms? If he knew that the tea was spiked, why did he still drink it? However, Wyatt was not examined by any doctor that he had drunk a cup of tea spiked with hallucinogenic mushrooms. All these information was told to the police by Wyatt. Therefore, it might be just a lie to the police that Wyatt had drunk a cup of tea spiked with hallucinogenic mushrooms that made him killed his partner.
The article had also said that all of the people including Wyatt and his friends had ingested the wild mushroom tea. But only Wyatt became violent and killed Mr Powell. However, if all the people have drunk the cup of tea, they should have the same effect as Wyatt. Therefore, Mr Powell, who had drank the cup of tea, would have the energy to stop Wyatt as he was his training partner. This is because when hallucinogenic mushrooms was consumed, it will increase energy of the consumer. Thus, the statement might be false that all of the people, including Wyatt had ingested hallucinogenic mushrooms.
In the article, it has also mentioned that Wyatt believed Mr Powell was threatening his ex-girlfriend. Thus, maybe Wyatt was trying to use the hallucinogenic mushrooms as an excuse to kill Mr Powell who Wyatt mentioned him as a “devil”.
In conclusion, I think that Wyatt might have set up all these with a purpose to kill Mr Powell as revenge to threaten his ex-girlfriend.

ReplyDeleteAfter Reading the article, I feel that the wild mushroom may not be totally at fault. My Wyatt told the police that he had druck a cup of tea spiked with hallucinogenic mushrooms and that his friend was possessed. However, i do not think that hallucination can cause someone to kill another person. This may be a result of Mr Wyatt character, such as being short temper or paranoid.
I also do pity his training partner. His way of death was too terrible. Having his face torn off and tongue cut. Worst still, he had to fill the pain of getting sliced open before his heart was rip out. After this incident, I do hope that the mushroom that may had cause the hallucination be controlled to who is it sold to. Even thought I may not think that it was totally the mushroom fault, it contributed to a certain extent. It is better to be safe than sorry so that such incident may not happen again.
