After watching the video, I do have to admit that this situation sometime do happen in Singapore. As a person who frequently takes buses, I have seen my shares of bus captain who do not wait for people even if they are only a few meters away and are running towards the bus. Fortunately, there are also bus captain in Singapore who has the patient to wait.

Those bus captains who do not wait may feel that it is unnecessary as the average waiting time for another bus to come is quite short, hence bus captain just drive off as they think that another bus will arrive shortly. Bus captain also sometimes do not stop at certain bus stop if they find that no one is alighting and there is only one person flagging for the bus. They might be eager to return to the interchange as early as possible so that they can have a longer break before their next journey.

However, there are still many bus captains who are willing to stop and wait. As bus drivers, they might have notice that especially in the morning, just missing one bus might result in being late for school or work. Hence, they understand this problem and are willing to wait in order to prevent this problem. Bus captains may also be trying their best to deliver outstanding service so that they have a chance to win the Excellent Service Award.

After watching this video, I think it is a common scene that often happens in Singapore. I personally also do encounter this incident before where I flagged for the bus but the bus captain do not stop the bus and just drove the bus away.

I think it is time for Singapore Government to do something to improve the standard service of Singapore bus captains. Here are some of my recommendations to improve the standard of bus captains' services.

Firstly, Bus Companies should train their staffs more regularly on how to be more polite to the passengers who boarded the bus. An example is bus captain should say Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening when the passengers boarded the bus so to let them have a pleasant trip when boarding the bus.

Secondly, bus captain should be more alert especially when there are senior citizens boarding the bus. He or she should offer help to the elderly when boarding the bus and make sure the elderly has seated then start driving.

Lastly, bus captain should stop the bus and wait for those peoples who are rushing to board the bus especially during the morning peak hours. This is because people who miss one bus may result to be late for work or schools which will make them feel unpleasant.

In conclusion, with the above I wrote, it will be helpful tips for the bus captains to improve their services towards the passengers thus making Singapore a friendly environment to live with.

  3. After watching this short video clip on Singapore's SBS and SMRT buses, I cannot help but side for both situations.
Personally,I've been taking SBS and SMRT buses for a quite a long time now. There have been times bus drivers stopped the bus for me to board and really, it is really appreciated to many. However, there are times when it seemed like I ran a marathon to catch the bus, but the bus driver just drives off!

I think the main reason why bus drivers are not willing to wait is because they are either not on the scheduled timing, or being simply put, do not have the patience or courtesy to wait for the passenger to board.

The service for Singapore nowadays have been going from bad to worse and many people have the lack of patience to wait, especially talking about the SBS and SMRT transport bus drivers.
I think the best way to solve this problem is by training the staff to think more about the passengers boarding the buses, improving their services to make Singapore a much better place to live in, and also, it feels much better to the passenger boarding the bus when the bus driver smiles at you after running for such long distances!

After watching the video, both the situations from the advertisement and reality really happened in Singapore. This is because I have encountered both the situations before. There was once when the bus driver has seen me and he just closed the door and drove off. However, I have also seen bus drivers who have waited for the passengers (including me).

The possible reason why the bus drivers are happy to wait are:

    Good mood / Have patience.
Some of the bus drivers have patience or are in a good mood, thus they are happy to wait for the passengers.

The possible reasons why the drivers do not want to wait are:

 Bad mood / No patience.
Some of the bus drivers are not in a good mood, thus they do not have the patience to wait for the passengers, especially when the movement of the passengers are very slow.

 Did not see the passenger.
Sometimes, the bus driver did not see the passengers that are chasing the bus due to some factors such as the passenger is blocked by some people etc.

 The bus is fully occupied.
Maybe the driver thinks that since the bus is fully occupied and the passengers cannot board the bus, thus there is no point to wait for the passengers. Thus the bus driver just drives the bus off.

In conclusion, I think that SBS and SMRT should conduct spot-checks to spot and catch those bus drivers who are so impatient and did not wait for the passengers. These bus drivers who are caught should be send for service training to improve their services.

As I travel on trains more frequent than on buses, I seldom encounter situations that bus drivers do not wait for passengers who rush to board the bus. From what I have usually observed, bus drivers do wait patiently, and they smile courteously to passengers who thank them for waiting. The reason bus drivers wait may be that they understand passengers need to rush for work or to school. Passengers may also rush because they do not wish to wait for the next bus when they are able to board the current bus if they rush for it.

In some situations, bus drivers may have already waited for passengers, but due to their delayed schedule, they are not able to wait for passengers who are rushing from a few metres away. In these situations, bus drivers should not wait, as it is their responsibility to make sure that the passengers on board are on time. In addition, in times when bus drivers are preparing to leave the bus stop, they have to shift their focus to their right side for other vehicles, thus they may have missed some passengers who are rushing at the left side of the bus.

Without personal transport, public transport is the most reliable and convenient mode of transport for Singaporeans. Passengers will always try to board the bus, as they need to be on time for work and school, thus bus drivers should wait patiently unless the bus is packed.

After watching finish the video clip, I feel that both situations are true in Singapore. I remembered the time when I was in my secondary school days, I will be chasing after the bus every day. Normally, the bus driver will stop for me and I was very grateful and relieved. If not, I will be late for school. However, sometimes the bus driver did not wait and left hastily. Nevertheless, I did not blame the bus driver as he may not notice me or perhaps there are cars behind.

I feel that that some drivers are not happy to wait because they may feel lethargic as they have to wait up early in the morning to work. Hence, they tend to be impatient and not aware that people are chasing after the bus. Sadly, I have to admit that some drivers do not bother to check and just leave quickly.

On the hand, some bus drivers are willing to wait because they will imagine themselves in the same situation. Imagine what if their children also wait for the bus but the bus driver just leaves without them? Therefore, they will think for the people. Also, they know that Singaporeans are rushing to work while teenagers are rushing for school. If they fail to wait, this will cause people to be late for work/school or project presentation might be delay.

In conclusion, I feel that bus drivers in Singapore should be more understanding. They should try to take note of people to check whether is there anyone wanting to board the bus.
